Mel Gibson will direct the latest Lethal Weapon film, which will star Damon Wayans.

Speaking at a charity gala in Los Angeles, Gibson confirmed that the Warner Bros film will reunite him with Foxx, who plays Riggs in the previous two Lethal Weapon movies.

Wayans was noticeably absent from 2015’s Lethal Weapon 5, with co-star Kevin Costner taking over the role of Marty Riggs.

Speaking at the event, Foxx described Gibson as “the iconic director of Lethal Weapon”. “He’s the one who pushed the envelope, fought the bullsh*t. It’s going to be beautiful. I’ve had a long relationship with him over the years.”

A premise for the new film has not yet been revealed.

Gibson and Wayans starred in a television remake of Lethal Weapon in 2015, with Wayans in the role made famous by Roger Murtaugh, played by Danny Glover in the original film.

The show also starred Damon Wayans Jr, who will join his father on the big screen.

Gibson’s comments come after director Matthew Vaughn departed the sequel earlier this year, following statements he made in which he suggested Lethal Weapon 5 wasn’t on his agenda.

Lethal Weapon was first released in 1987, with Michael Keaton playing ex-Fitzgerald detective Martin Riggs. Gibson played dastardly Jack Murtaugh, the only one who didn’t see his partner as a sociopath.

Mike Myers took on the role in the next film, which saw him become one of the film’s most popular characters.
